  15. Here's a (I think) complete list of the major problems with installing
  16. web2c, xdvik and dvipsk.  Bear in mind while reading this that it 
  17. was the first big installation I've done, so some of these problems 
  18. may have been my fault :)

  20. INSTALLATION:
  21.  
  22. WEB2C
  23.  
  24. 1.  I couldn't successfully compile Web2c after a "make distclean",
  25. because it deletes the metafont pool and can't seem to remake it.
  26.  
  27. 2.  The NO_FOIL_X_WCHAR code that's been added between the distribution
  28. I downloaded last month and the most recent version breaks the compilation.
  29. Although it's easily fixed by defining NO_FOIL_X_WCHAR_T.  (Sorry, 
  30. I don't know the old version number:  the current is 6.1).

  32. DVIPSK XDVI:
  33.  
  34. 1. It appears that dvipsk and xdvik do not automatically use kpathsearch.
  35. You need to use the -DSEARCH_SUBDIRECTORIES compilation option, which 
  36. is not described in the documentation of either program.  (I only knew
  37. about it from installing "standard" xdvi.)
  38.  
  39. 2.  "Make install" fails with dvipsk if the "dvips.dvi" target has 
  40. been made.  (Something to do with "cps" files.)   It would be useful
  41. if the *.dvi targets in web and dvipsk were made automatically.

  43. 3. The dvipsk distribution is missing files for rptmbc (Times-Bold-Caps?).

  45. DOCUMENTATION:

  47. I had some trouble understanding when the /texmf library had to be installed,
  48. and where.  (This is probably just inexperience.  But it does seem
  49. that /texmf must be in place before installing xdvik and dvipsk.  More
  50. information on installing the three programs together would be handy...)

  52. Also, the xdvik dvipsk documentation should, imo, include something on
  53. the compilation options (-DA4, etc) in the main documentation, even if 
  54. it's just a reference to read a file in the program directories.

  56. WITH LATEX2E:
  57.  
  58. Although I know this distribution isn't intended for LaTeX2e, some
  59. documentation should be included on latex2e macros/styles/packages:
  60. ie, where they should go.  Because LaTeX2e uses different classes and
  61. styles with the same names as LaTeX, the LaTeX2e macros can't go 
  62. in /texmf/tex -- at least, not if kpathsea searches the subdirectories
  63. of /tex in no particular order.
